Pilates, which was developed in the early years of the twentieth century, consists of a series of controlled, flowing movements. It can:

• Improve body shape
• Strengthen the body
• Promote flexibility
• Remedy postural problems
• Improve balance and coordination
• Help to reduce stress and aid relaxation

It is practised by people from all walks of life: from dancers to rugby players; sedentary office workers to athletes; people in their twenties to retired ladies and gentlemen. It can be adapted for rehabilitation after some surgery, pre- and post-natal ladies, and recovery after physiotherapy. It works by strengthening the “core” muscles of the body, that is muscles mainly around the trunk, shoulders and pelvis, while at the same time performing slow, controlled exercises.

The exercises can be practised as part of a matwork class, on a one-to-one basis or small group, or on special pieces of equipment in a studio, all with an appropriately qualified instructor.
